As I move about the apartment, he watches. I attempt to be as casual as possible putting forth every effort to appear like nothing has changed. His eyes probing me for reassurance that everything is fine. Fine.

The baby isn’t fine; bruises removing her innocence. He spoke. “Are you sure you’re okay? I don’t want you going anywhere. I want you here with me.” He attempts to camouflage the words with concern over how tired I must be.

I laugh off the significance of his statements. “You’re just sleepy. You should take a nap or something. There will be another game on this evening.”

With added determination he sits up straight. Damn! I shouldn’t have said that.

The Pressure (Me, My Blue-green Basket…)

Each word suffocating the next until I have no breath.

My mom wouldn’t be allowed to go. He would be present for each conversation. I want an investigation done! I don’t have the power to question him thoroughly, but the doctor does and he can report him. How can I get to the truth out? Why me? Why my baby? Why is this happening!?!!

“Well, the doctor’s office doesn’t open until 9am. I will have to call and make an appointment.” Mom’s eyes tell me that she realizes that I pulled her in here with an untruth, I hadn’t forgotten a doctor’s appointment. She’s taking everything in and remains silent. God, I love my mom.
